Experimental Brick Pavilion

Developed as part of a collaborative project at TU Vienna, BRICKerl explored alternative approaches to masonry construction through a mortarless brick assembly system.
Using Wienerberger perforated bricks as the primary construction element, the pavilion exposed the internal structure of the blocks through rotation and repetition across the façade. Industrial tension belts held the bricks together and connected them to the timber structure behind using a specially developed “brick-sewing” technique.
Installed at MuseumsQuartier Vienna, the pavilion and its integrated furnace hosted a series of public clay workshops throughout the summer of 2017.
As part of Assemble Studio’s exhibition How We Build at Architekturzentrum Wien, the pavilion and its development process were exhibited through documentation of the construction process, material research and collaborative development.
