Soft Machine explores the transformation of an abandoned watermill through architecture, performance and imagination. Rather than reconstructing the ruin to its original state, the workshop proposes a lightweight kinetic roof structure that reimagines the building through an imagined fictional past, creating a flexible stage for different spatial and performative scenarios and opening the existing structure to new interpretations.
The unstable, kinetic nature of proposed roof symbolises departure and absence. Through the movement of the roof, the invisible process of disappearing, of transitioning into non-existence, is made visible. This is connected to Valga, where disappearance manifests through the remnants of former houses, abandoned buildings, ruins, unfinished structures and empty streets.
The representation of letting go aims to provide an honest and profound understanding of the act of disappearance, while simultaneously opening up a space for the imaginary.
